With holiday flavored lattes, big turkey dinners, and cookie bakes, it’s no wonder we tend to indulge during the holidays. It is easy to overdo it, and although these special times should be enjoyed, it is important to get back on track for long-term health.

Here are my top 5 simple ways to get back to health & fitness:

1) Get moving!

Start today. Get a workout in and I promise you will feel better! Set a goal to move for 30 minutes a day. 2) Plan ahead

I love planning my meals for the week. I like to focus on creating balanced meals with protein, veggies, and complex carbs. Look for new recipes you want to try. When your meals sound exciting, then you are more likely to stick to your plan! Make your list, head over to the grocery store, and buy food only from your list.

3) Don’t cut out sugar completely

If you have a sweet tooth like me, you might like this tip! Sugar has some short-term addictive qualities, so if you cut out all sugar at once, you are likely to crave it. This could lead to bingeing on unhealthy food and not feeling good as a result. It’s a good idea to start eating less sugar though. Try eating fruit like apples and berries. It IS okay to eat a cookie, too! Just enjoy the unhealthy sweets in moderation.

4) Drink water

I know you probably hear this all the time, but seriously do it! Drinking water will help boost your energy and feel better overall. If you need some accountability with drinking enough water, I recommend getting a Hidrate Spark water bottle. It connects to an app so you can track your progress throughout the day. The bottle lights up as a reminder to drink. You’ll even get reminders on your Apple Watch or Fitbit!

5) Limit Alcohol

Or better, don’t drink it. Drinking can lead to overeating or eating unhealthy foods. As we all know, alcohol is high in calories and low in nutrition. It can be extremely harmful to your body. But if you decide to drink it, make sure to drink in moderation and drink water to stay hydrated.

Most importantly, do not feel guilty! The holidays are meant to be enjoyed and food is part of the celebration! Overeating a few days does not mean you need to continue to overeat or that all of your progress is lost. It’s a good thing to treat yourself every once in awhile so you don’t deprive yourself. Focus on the present and commend yourself for committing to getting back on track.
