It is more common than you would think to feel uncomfortable in the gym, especially if you are just starting out. You may question everything you do or feel like the whole gym is watching you. I am here to tell you that it’s okay to feel that way! You are not alone in gym anxiety. I mean, come on! The gym can be a highly intimidating place.
As someone who hasn’t always been confident in the gym, I am here to tell you that you can and WILL get through it! In fact, I believe that following my tips will make you feel comfortable going to the gym in no time!
When going to the gym for the first time, you want to choose an outfit that makes you feel both comfortable and confident. So pick out workout clothes that feel breathable, supportive, and don’t restrict your range of motion.
In addition to comfortable clothes, you also want to choose something that flatters you. Of course, looking good at the gym is not the goal, but feeling good about yourself will definitely increase your overall confidence!

Nobody said that you had to do this alone. If you have a friend, coworker, or family member who is already a gym member or wants to become one, ask them to join you!
Bringing along someone you trust can make you feel less alone and vulnerable. Even if you both have no clue what you are doing, you’ll have a good laugh instead of being filled with insecurities.
One of the best ways to build confidence in the gym is to educate yourself before going in. Watching a few videos and reading about the exercises you are interested in will make you feel knowledgeable and increase the chances of you trying something new!

Show up! Yes, this is the most challenging part but also the most important part. Exposure to our fears is the best way to overcome them. So no matter how intimidating the gym is, you can’t let it stop you from showing up.
I promise that you will naturally gain confidence if you keep going and pushing yourself to go. After a few sessions, your anxiety levels will drop, and the gym will become your second home!
I know it is difficult to do new things, but it gets easier and MUCH more enjoyable with time. You might find that your first time showing up to the gym is terrifying (maybe even your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). But with every fiber of my being, I believe that you have the power to overcome your gym anxiety and learn to love the atmosphere!
