Seems too easy, right? Too good to be true?
The truth: Yes, drinking more water can help you lose weight.
Here is why…
Water helps break down fats in our bodies. The very first step of the body’s process for metabolizing fat occurs when water molecules interact with triglycerides (fats). Without water, our bodies can’t properly metabolize food or stored fat.
Drinking water increases the rate at which your body burns calories. Studies have shown that drinking water can increase your resting energy expenditure by 24-30%.
By simply replacing all sugary drinks with water, you reduce your daily caloric intake. Replacing your drinks with water will help you lose weight over time.
Hydration improves workouts by decreasing fatigue. You can work out longer and burn more calories when you are hydrated.
Drinking plenty of water can also prevent you from overeating. Drinking a glass of water 30 minutes before a meal can decrease your appetite and calorie intake.
Additionally, dehydration can actually cause you to eat MORE. Studies show that not drinking enough water can create a weight loss plateau and prevent you from meeting your wellness goals. Sometimes our bodies confuse thirst with hunger, so a good rule of thumb is to drink some water first and see how you feel after 15 minutes.
Make it a priority to drink plenty of water throughout the day – especially before, during and after a workout – instead of just drinking when you are thirsty.
Remember, your body is made up of 60% water, so drinking enough water helps the body with much more than weight loss.
Water will also help:
Your brain work efficiently.
Regulate blood pressure.
Your energy levels.
Relieve constipation.
Keep your skin clear and bright.
So, I hope this motivates you to stay hydrated, friends! I challenge you to drink 8 glasses of water a day for 8 days.
One of my favorites ways to stay hydrated is to use my Hidrate Spark water bottle. It tracks how much you drink and even lights up to remind you to drink. You can see your progress in the Hidrate app. If you aren’t sure how much water you should be drinking, the app will help calculate the right amount to drink each day. Super easy!
But drinking more water should only be a small part of your weight loss efforts. In order to truly see results, stick to a well-rounded workout routine and a healthy diet. Many things affect health and weight, so sticking to your water goals will definitely help you get there!
