The countdown has begun! Your dress fits like a glove, the make-up artist is all lined up, you have your jewelry picked out, but wait – what are you going to do with your hair?! If you haven’t picked out your wedding hairstyle yet, you might be getting nervous figuring out whether you should have it up or down, straight or curly, natural or done up. After years of working as a wedding fitness coach, I’ve picked up a few nifty tricks for helping brides decide on the best hairstyle for their wedding and getting everything ready to go for the big day.
Formal or whimsical, bridal updos can be customized to fit any theme. If your dress has a heavy neckline, this style is perfect to balance it out, while a ballgown is for going all out! If you are getting married on a beach (or anywhere that might be windy!), consider choosing an updo that you love. You’ll be happy that your hair wasn’t flying all over the place in your wedding photos. Last but not least, updos are less frizzy, easier to maintain, and will keep you feeling cool throughout the night. I think it’s pretty much the best option if you have an outdoor wedding and you don’t want to worry about your hair!
Playful and versatile, loose wedding hairstyles range from classic blowouts, soft waves to sleeker options. If you’re going for a more relaxed rustic look, think about some loose beachy curls. If you’re wearing a pant suit, a smooth straightened look tucked behind the ears might be the perfect fit.
If you’re stuck in the middle then a half-up, half-down hairdo might be for you! Perfect for strapless, flowy, or spaghetti strap wedding dresses. You can have the best of both worlds with this hairstyle, and you can make it unique by adding in some braids, curls, and hair accessories.
As you reach the four-month point, it’s time to get the show on the road! Look for some inspiration and make sure to save any styles that catch your eye. Play around with different hairstyle accessories and see what you like best with your hairstyle. If you’re going to wear a veil, try placing it in different areas to see where it looks best.
Next, research some hair professionals in your neighborhood, or near the location of your wedding, and set up a few consultations. Once you feel like you’ve found the right fit, book at least one hairstyle trial to make sure that you’ve found your perfect wedding hairstyle. Make sure to bring any hair accessories with you to the trial.
Side note for my destination wedding brides: Consider finding a family member who has good hair skills who can do your hair for your wedding! I got married at a beautiful resort in Punta Cana, but I had NO idea who my hairstylist will be. I had one hair test the night before my wedding and I did not love my hair. I gave her feedback on my wedding day and I still didn’t love it. That’s the only thing I wish I would’ve changed about my wedding day look! So please learn from my mistake and make sure you ask the resort for stylist information and portfolios ahead of time or have a friend or family member style your hair for you.
Bride pro tip: For your hair trial, bring any accessories you’ll be using (in addition to the hair accessories) and a picture of your wedding dress and makeup inspiration so your stylist can envision the entire look. When your hair is done, take pictures of your hairstyle (get every angle!) for a sneak peek at how it’ll look in photos. Once you’re happy, it’s time to book!
Picking the best bridal hairdo is about choosing what makes you feel comfortable and confident in your skin. I’d advise you not to pick a hairstyle just because it’s trendy. You will look your best when you feel your best. Whether it’s your favorite go-to style or something completely new, you can’t go wrong as long as it feels right to you.
So, create a hairstyle Pinterest board, have fun playing around with different styles, and make sure you go with the hairstyle you truly love the most!
